Effective Aug. 15, the planned surcharge will be $150 per 20-foot equivalent unit.
The carrier said the surcharge will apply to both east and westbound shipments between Nhava Sheva and destinations in Northwest Europe as well as the Mediterranean.
The move follows similar surcharge announcements by other major carriers covering the trades to and from India, including Maersk Line, APL, Orient Overseas Container Line and NYK Line.
The lines cited increased operational costs caused by persistent delays and low productivity as reasons for levying the emergency surcharges.
The port authority described the $150 per-TEU emergency surcharge that many carriers implemented as of July 15 as “unjustifiable” and called on them to reconsider their decision in the overall interest of trade.
Nhava Sheva, India’s largest container port, handled a record throughput of 4.06 million TEUs in fiscal 2009-10 ended March 31. Traffic for the April-June quarter rose 12 percent to 1.09 million TEUs from 973,000 TEUs in the year-ago period.
