Kochi Port has had an excellent first quarter with cargo throughput going up 23 per cent between April and June this year, Port Trust sources said.
The change is a healthy one because Kochi Port is going through a cargo profile change, Port sources added as they pointed to the quantum jump in throughput of items such as liquid bulk cargo and construction materials such as cement and timber.
Figures released by Indian Ports Association at the end of June quarter showed that other ports in the country showed an average rise in cargo handling of less than two per cent, reported The Hindu.
Port sources said that cargo throughput went up from 3.6 million tonnes during April-June 2009 to 4.48 million tonnes during the same period this year.
Figures from the Ports Association showed that no other major port had come close to Kochi's achievement during the first quarter.
Mumbai port showed a 10.27 per cent increase in cargo throughput; Chennai an increase in volume of 10.06 per cent and JNPT an increase of 6.92 per cent. Kandla Port showed an increase of 5.84 per cent in cargo throughput for the period.
Kochi Port's performance contrasts heavily with Ennore Port, which showed its cargo throughput dipping more than 22 per cent.
Cargo throughput at New Managalore port fell nearly 10 per cent.
Container traffic too moved up in tandem at Kochi port, showing an increase of 17 per cent in terms of the number of containers. Container traffic went up to 84,545 TEUs during April-June this year from the previous year's first quarter level of 72,122 TEUs.
