Marseilles-Fos H1 container throughput up 17 percent to 510,819 TEUs

First-half container throughput at the Port of Marseilles Fos rose 17 percent from the same period last year in both tonnage terms and container units.
Throughput during the six-month period totaled 510,819 TEUs weighing 5 million metric tons and is on track to reach 1 million TEUS for the year as a whole.
Intra-Mediterranean traffic at Marseilles rose by 36 percent to 135,616 TEUs from the year-earlier period, which was hit by periodic strikes over privatization.
The Port of Fos handled 75,203 TEUs, up 12 percent on the strength of the East-West trades.
Volumes at the French port were up in all main categories except oil, which fell 6 percent to 28.2 million metric tons due to reduced demand for crude imports.
General cargo tonnage was up 18 percent to 8.3 million metric tons.
Roll-on, roll-off traffic rose 5 percent to 2.1 million metric tons and conventional traffic gaining 61 percent to 1.2 million metric tons as demand for steel products recovered from the world recession.
Marseilles gained its first Turkish ro-ro service during the first half when Turkey’s U.N. RO-RO launched a service linking Marseilles with the Pendik and Ambarli ro-ro terminals in Istanbul: initial frequency is weekly, transit time is three days and vessel capacity is 200 trailers.
The new service will boost Marseilles’ trade with Turkey, which amounted to 0.9 million metric tons last year.
