NWSC’s half-year freight volume rises 11.5% to 3,2m tons

Freight traffic volume carried by North-West Shipping Company (NWSC) in Jan-June of 2010 rose to 3,200,000 tons, up 11.5% over the same period last year, the company’s press office said.

Six-month export shipments totaled 1.5 million tons, at the last year’s level, while imports volume rose by 11.6%, to 291,000 tons. Transportation between foreign ports also increased - by 26.4% and amounted to 1.34 million tons. Inland shipments by the company totaled 73,000 tons, a twofold surge y-o-y.

Overall, timber cargo volume soared 2,5 times as much in H1,2010, to 527,000 tons, scrap metal volume jumped 50.8%, to 327.15 million tons, fertilizer volume - to 455,000 tons (+14.3% ), ferrous metals - up to 639,000 tons (+ 1,6 times), coal - to 141,000 tons (2,2 times as much).

North-West Shipping JS Company is part of the holding VBTH, owned by its major stockholder, an international transport group Universal Cargo Logistics Holding, consolidating a number of Russian shipping, stevedoring and shipbuilding companies.

NWSC is rated the largest carrier in the Russian water transport, specializing in shipments general cargo, bulked cargoes, providing tugging of oversized cargo and vessels.

The company manages and operates a fleet of some 145 vessels with 550,000DWT, including 120 sea-river-going ships, 4 barges, 12 tugboats and eight support vessels. The NWSC’s annual volume of freight traffic reaches about 6 million tons. The company has boosted to 10% its share on the Russia’s market of transport services.
