Russia OKs its long-term development strategy in the Antarctic

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed a decree on October 30, 2010 (N1926-p), which approves the Development Strategy of the Russian Federation in the Antarctic for the period up to 2020 and a more distant prospect. The document was posted on the government’s official website.

Federal executive authorities and the Russian Academy of Sciences must be guided by the provisions of the approved strategy in the development of policy documents, plans and performance of their activities, the document said.

In implementing this Strategy the responsible agencies should carry out in the Antarctic monitoring of environmental components (atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere) and specialized research to assess the impact of global climate change on these components and vice versa. According to the document, the Strategy will be implemented in 3 phases. As a result Russia is expected to attain leading position in the world in research of the Antarctic.
