HHLA eyes using electric AGVs, to lower CO2 emissions

Terminal operator and logistics group Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA) is participating in a research project which aims to lower CO2 emissions through the use of battery-powered container transporters.

HHLA, automated guided vehicle manufacturer Gottwald Port Technology, the Institute for Vehicle Technology at RWTH Aachen University and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, Heidelberg, are researching electric battery propulsion.

The project is part of a testing scheme that has €1.2 million (US$1.65m) in backing from the Federal German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety.

HHLA’s Altenwerder terminal at Hamburg already moves containers using AGVs, and if the test project is a success, the operator will withdraw them from service and replace them with electrically-powered models.

“The AGV has proved its worth, and we are therefore committed to supporting Gottwald’s research programme. We hope that this will soon enable us to transport our containers in an even more climate-friendly fashion,” said Heinrich Goller, MD of HHLA Container Terminals.
