Russian PF warships to join NAVFOR coalition in the Gulf of Aden, combating piracy

The warships of Russian Pacific Fleet (RPF) have completed drills and are prepared to head for the Gulf of Aden from Vladivostok. This is the fifth time the warships with the marines on board will participate in the international UN mission to combat sea pirates, RIA Novosti reports.

A group of warships include the Admiral Vinogradov, a large antisubmarine destroyer, the Pechenega tanker, and sea rescue tug leave Vlavidostok port tomorrow, Nov. 17 to bound for the Gulf of Aden the Indian Ocean.

The Admiral Vinogradov will take over a service of the Admiral Levchenko subchaser of the Northern Fleet that has been patrolling the area from July to November and escorted 57 merchant vessels. The warships of the group have on board 231 Russian marines.

The Russian Navy began to patrol the Gulf of Aden in 2008.
