Chennai Port strike ends
The local Trailer Owners’ Association struck work Sunday night without any prior notice, protesting poor approach road conditions and calling for speedy implementation of the Ennore-Manali highway project.
The settlement came after the port chairman intervened and held talks with representatives of the truck operator-owner group.
“Road repairs would be completed in a month, and work on the four-lane Ennore-Manali highway project will commence in February next year,” the chairman assured the truckers.
Port officials said striking drivers returned to work and all efforts were being made to evacuate inbound containers stranded at the terminals.
Officials also said the Confederation of Surface Transport, representing all transport companies in the state, also agreed to call off a threatened indefinite strike scheduled for Nov. 22 following the port chairman’s intervention and assurance.
