Local Gov. sees more shipping from Murmansk via NSR

The share of shipping of goods from the port of Murmansk through the North Sea Route may reach 60% of overall freight traffic, Murmansk Region Governor Dmitry Dmitrienko said today in Moscow speaking at the Russian Transport Week, PortNews correspondent reports.
The regional official pointed out that according to forecasts the volume of traffic on the North shipping lane will reach 18,8 million tons a year by 2016.

Mr. Dmitrienko also said that the North Sea Route has ceased to be regarded only just as a shipping lane for state delivery of goods to remote regions the Russian Far North. Now it has become a strategic line for the transportation of Russian hydrocarbons and maintenance of offshore fields. Therefore, according to the official, this requires the construction of a new special fleet to service the route, updated requirements, including special regulations of underwater operations.
