Coal India plans shipping JV with SCI for thermal coal import

Coal India plans to strike a joint venture with Shipping Corporation of India in next two months. The proposed 50:50 venture is scheduled to offer end to end logistics solution to CIL's thermal coal import program, BL reported.
Apart from catering to the demand of CIL, the joint venture will be free to offer shipping logistics to any other importer of coal in the country.
CIL plans to import 6 million tonnes of thermal coal either from the open market or through long-term contracts in this fiscal based on firm commitments from power utilities including NTPC, Damodar Valley Corporation and others.
The firm commitments are placed (by utilities) under the agreement that coal will be supplied to the respective thermal power generation units of the utilities.
The proposed joint venture will be responsible for ensuring transportation of the coal right from the sourcing point to the doorsteps of the consumers.
