Vladimir Nikolayev expects more shipping via VBW next year, up to 19m tons of cargo

Next year, the volume of cargo transportation through Volga-Baltic Waterway may rise to 19 million tons, SBD Volga-Balt Waterway director Vladimir Nikolayev said responding to a question of PortNews correspondent at a St. Petersburg conference. The forecast was explained by projected overhaul of waterway facilities, which will increase the VBW throughput capacity.

Mr. Nikolayev expects some 2 billion rubles to be allocated for the waterways reconstruction project in 2011.

During this year’s navigation 18,4 million tons of cargo were shipped through the Volga-Balt Waterway, up 10% over the previous year.

Volga-Balt, Volga-Baltic Waterway is one of the major lanes of the deepwater network of inland waterways of the European part of Russia. This is a complex of engineering facilities, which includes 4,900 km of navigable waterways, including 3,270 km with guaranteed dimensions, 11 locks with water lift of 11 to 18 meters, three hydroelectric plants, 25 earth dams and levees, 12 ferries, 9 bridges, 8 lighthouses in the Lake of Ladoga, more than 5,000 signs of navigation situation, 273 vessels of service fleet. In 2009, traffic volume on the Volga-Baltic Waterway fell 8% year-on-year to 16.7 million tons of cargo (timber, construction, chemical goods, metals, oil, flux, etc.).
