“The establishment of the third leg became urgent as the occupancy rate has exceeded 80 per cent. Now the free zone stands to lose customers if no expansion work is undertaken,” said a source.
A spokesman for Dubai Ports World said: “DP World follows a policy of constant review of market needs and demand in connection with Jebel Ali Port.”
Earlier, DP World had decided to postpone implementation of Terminal 3 in Jebel Ali until 2013. The company expected economic recovery as well as arrangement of funds by then.
The $1.5 billion Terminal 1 and 2 project was opened last year. No figure has been given for Terminal 3, which was initially scheduled for completion in two years, but is not expected to be implemented until 2011.
