UCL Group’s Oka Shipyard launches first river-going ship

An official launching ceremony of river-going dry bulk vessel was held at Navashino-based Oka Shipyard (Nizhny Novgorod Region). The Captain Ruzmankin turned to be the first river ship built in 25 recent years at Russian shipyards. The vessel is the first of a series of 10 multipurpose bulkers of RSD-44 project, intended for transportation of bulk, general cargo and containers. The ship construction is funded through the UCL’s development program of shipping and shipbuilding companies, the Group’s press service said.

The bulkers constructed for Volga Shipping Company will gradually replace the Volga-Don ships. The new ships are characterized by increased productive efficiency, environmental safety and comfort.

The RSD-44 project ships will be able to pass under the bridges of the Russian cities without drawing the bridges that significantly reduce the time of cargo delivery.

Dry cargo ships will be named after captains of the Volga Shipping Company, who died in the Battle of Stalingrad, during World War II.

This project is carried out under the leasing scheme of state support for domestic shipbuilding: co-financing by United Shipbuilding Corporation investing 85% of funds and the future owner of the ship - Volga Shipping (15%) with under the state subsidy of 2 / 3 of Russian Central Bank refinancing rate.

Ship-load of the project RSD44 vessels is 5,500 tons versus 5,000 tons of Volga-Don ships. Overall height of new ships - 8 meters (nearly two times lower). The vessels will be the most automated and equipped with modern screw-steering columns, which give high agility and good course-keeping qualities.

Keel-laying of the dry cargo ship Captain Ruzmankin was held at Oka Shipyard on 24 February 2010 and will be delivered to the customer in 2011 after sea trials. The vessel is named in honor of shipmaster Peter Ruzmankin, who died in Stalingrad in 1942.

UCL Holding’s shipbuilding company Oka (Okskaya) Shipyard, founded in 1907, is located on the Oka River in Navashino of Nizhny Novgorod Region. The shipyard is a major manufacturer and supplier of river and sea-going vessels of various types and purposes.
