A consortium led by APM Terminals, the terminal-operating division of A.P. Moller-Maersk, was awarded the contract to modernize and operate the multipurpose Muelle Norte terminal at Peru's Port of Callao, the Journal of Commerce reports.
The consortium, which includes Dutch firm Callao Port Holding and Peru's Central Portuaria, was awarded the concession after the competition went to a third tiebreak, based on the lowest tariff offered for special port services.
The APM group offered a bigger discount than the only other bidder, a group formed by Hutchinson Port Holdings, Port Investment Limited and Sino Invest, state news agency Andina reported.
The consortium will invest some $750 million in the terminal concession, which involves modernizing and upgrading docks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 at Callao, Peru's busiest port.
The Muelle Norte terminal handles containers, breakbulk cargo, bulk cargo and roll-on, roll-off vessels.
APM is not the first port operator to enter the Peruvian port. DP World opened a new container terminal in Callao in the second quarter of 2010.
