Port of Yuzhny’s cargo volume up 11.8% to over 5m tons

Cargo throughput of the Port of Yuzhny (Ukraine) in the I quarter of 2011 increased by 11.8% compared to January-March 2010 to 5,278,400 tons, the company’s press service said.

During the reporting period Yuzhny Port handled 42,127 gondola cars and 219 ships. The bulk of the three-month freight volume was ore – 2,128,000 tons.

In March, the stevedore company handled 1,731,100 tons of cargo, loaded / unloaded 15,358 gondolas and 76 ships.

State-run Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port founded in 1978 is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, in the ice-free Small Adzhalyksk (Grygoryivsky) estuary, 30 km northeast of Odessa. The vessels arriving / departing the port via a 3km-long 14m-deep canal need pilotage service. In 2010, Yuzhny port’s cargo throughput was up 2.1% year-over-year to 18.22 million.
