Vaigach icebreaker to operate in the Gulf until 10 April - Atomflot

The operations of nuclear-powered icebreaker Vaigach in eastern part of the Gulf of Finland will not be extended after April 10, 2011, PortNews correspondent reported citing Atomflot’s Operations CEO Andrei Smirnov who was speaking at a briefing with journalists. According to Mr. Smirnov, after its operation in the Gulf the icebreaker will be deployed in Murmansk. The Vaigach will then be engaged in assisting merchant ships bound for the Yamal-based Sabetta port, now under construction.

As Andrei Balashov, the Chief of Rosmorport’s St. Pb branch operations said, the diesel-electric icebreaker Captain Dranitsyn will continue operating in the Gulf until the end of winter navigation.

The icebreaker Vaigach entered the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland on February 26, 2011. The vessel was directed from Murmansk to the Gulf of Finland to aid the fleet of 12 diesel-electric icebreakers of Rosmorport, escorting cargo ships in extremely heavy ice conditions in the area.
