The bulk of the first-quarter freight traffic was exported coal – 2,684,500 tons (79% of MCS’ total cargo throughput). In the reporting period the stevedore increased handling of iron ore concentrate by 88% compared to the same period of 2010, to 121,500 tons; pellets – by 40% to 26,600 tons, manganese ore – as much as two times, to 68,700 tons. Transshipment of cargo carried by coasters surged by 55%. In Jan-Mar, 2011 MCS handled 47,160 rail cars and 123 cargo vessels.
The company says it expects the Q1, 2011 revenue to amount to RUB 720 million.
As MCS CEO Viktor Morozov said, during the period, the port has slightly changed the nomenclature of cargo, and handled several shipments of mineral fertilizers. The company is weighing up the possibility of handling imports and goods intended for the Northern Sea Route. Murmansk Commercial Seaport and Atomflot have planned a test shipment of exported iron ore via the northern sea lane to China.
Besides, MCS has commenced major overhaul of the First Cargo Area berths. The company plans to spend some RUB 200m for by the end of 2011 for the reconstruction.
OJSC Murmansk Commercial Seaport was founded in 1994. The stevedore company operates 17 berths with total length of about 3 km. The berths depths allow accommodation of vessels with length of over 265 meters and breadth of 15,5 meters. In 2010, MCS’ cargo throughput was over 12,8 million tons.
