Port Liepaja posts strong results for Q1, 2011, to about 1,2m tons

Freight traffic passing through Port of Liepaja (Latvia) in the first quarter of 2011 rose as much as 18.4% from the same period last year, to 1,192,900 tons, PortNews reported citing the Liepaja Port Authority.
 
In the reporting period grain cargo volume dropped by nearly 21.4% to 291,500 tons, handling of timber cargo fell by 17.4% to 195,000 tons, while transshipment of petroleum products increased by 13.6% to 147,600 tons, of ferrous metals - by 29.2% to 159,000 tons. Shipment of scrap metal soared as much as 5.4 times, to 88,800 tons. In March, the port’s cargo throughput totaled 433,300 tons.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2010, Liepaja handled 4,38 million tons of cargo, on a par with 2009’s figures.
