Somali pirates hike ransom demand for Indonesian crew

Somali pirates have hiked their ransom demand for 20 crewmen of Indonesia's Sinar Kudus ship, owned by Samudera. Earlier, the pirates requested US$2.6m. However, the demand was then raised to US$3.5m and now is believed to be sitting at $9m.?The latest update from the ship showed that 12 crewmembers are suffering from serious illnesses.
The government claims it is doing its best to ensure the safety of 20 Indonesians held hostage by Somali pirates since the middle of last month, following reports of the worsening health of some hostages.?The hijacking occurred on March 16 off Somalia. The ship was carrying ferronickel belonging to state mining company PT Aneka Tambang from Indonesia to Rotterdam.
