Icebreaker Vaigach leaves Russian part of the Gulf of Finland

The nuclear-powered icebreaker Vaigach has left the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland. Now the ship is en route to Murmansk passing by the south off Hanko at the speed of 18 knots.

The Vaigach, owned by Atomflot, arrived on Feb. 26 to join the fleet of the Romorport’s diesel-electric icebreakers escorting merchant ships in the Baltic Sea. According to initial agreement the nuclear-powered icebreaker was to return to the port of Murmansk on March 16, but later the contract was extended until April 10. The cost of the icebreaker’s operations in the Gulf was some RUB 3,3m (about $118ths) a day.
