Russian seaports’ Q1 throughput down 1.9% to 120,75m tons

Handling of cargo at major Russian seaports in the first quarter of 2011 shrank by 1.9% compared to January-March, 2010, to 120,750 million tons, the press service of the Association of Commercial Seaports (ASOP) reports.

The first-quarter volume of dry cargoes totaled 46,68 million tons (-0,6%), including coal – 16,4 million tons (+10.1%), containerized cargo - 8,650m tons (+19,5%), mineral fertilizer - 2,78m tons (+6.7%). In Jan-Mar, 2011 the ports’ stevedores did not handle export grain (4,3 million tons a year earlier). There was a 19.6% decline in the volume of ferrous metals, liquid bulk fell 2.6% to 74,07m tons, including 49,23m tons of crude oil (-4.6%) and 24,53m tons of petroleum products (+2%).

The ports have seen a 38.2-percent rebound in imports, to 10,47 million tons, while handling of exports dropped by 5.7% to 91,1 million tons. Transshipment of transit goods rose by 20.8% to 12.88 million tons, the volume of short sea traffic was down 22.9% to 6,31 million tons.

Operators of marine terminals at Northwestern Basin handled 49,93 million tons of cargo, or 4.3% down from Q1, 2010. Handling of dry cargo increased by 5% to 19.18 million tons. There was a decline in handling of liquid bulk cargo across all ports of the region - 30,75 million tons (- 9.4%): shipment of crude oil via Murmansk Belokamenka  FSO slumped by 36.6%, Primorsk terminal posted a 5.2-percent drop, Vysotsk -5.7%), Varandey Terminal (-34, 2%). However, Big Port St. Petersburg handled 11,81m tons of the cargo (+5%), the port of Ust-Luga – 2,69 million tons (+13.5%), Arkhangelsk port’s liquid bulk volume rose 10%, to 0,68m tons.

The South Basin seaports handled 41,69 million tons of cargo (-5.1%), including 12,25 million tons of dry cargo (-16.3%) and 29,43 million tons of liquid bulk (+0,5%). Cargo throughput of Novorossiysk port was down 7.9% to 28,27m tons, while the port of Astrakhan posted a 6.5-percent gain, Taganrog port’s cargo volume rose by 24.4%, Rostov – by 12.3%, Temryuk – by 12.1%. Port of Olya’s throughput increased as much as 1.5 times.

Stevedore companies of the Far Eastern ports handled in the reporting period 29,13 million tons of cargo (+8.3%), of which 15,25 million tons (+8.3%) of dry cargo and 13,88 million tons (+8.2%) of liquid bulk cargo. Freight volume handled at the port of Vanino increased by 16.6% to 4,37 million tons, Vladivostok port reported a 1.4 percent gain to 2,59 million tons, Vostochny port (including Kozmino Terminal) handled 9,05 million tons (+17.4%), cargo throughput of the ports of Sakhalin rose by 4.4%, to 5.15 million tons.
