The March figure was 22% more than the 48.64 million metric tons recorded in February this year.
In the period from January to March this year, China's iron ore imports increased 14.4% year on year to 177.17 million metric tons.
Last month, China's steel exports and imports were 4.91 million metric tons and 1.53 million metric tons, respectively. In the first three months of this year, China's steel exports and imports were 10.51 million metric tons and 4.18 million metric tons, up 21% and 1.7% year on year, respectively.
China's iron ore output is expected to increase 13% year on year to 1.2 billion metric tons in 2010. The growth rate was 7 percentage points lower than that in 2010 as a result of slowing growth in investment in domestic iron ore development, sources reported.
