Singapore port container throughput up to 2.5m TEU in March

The port of Singapore moved higher container volumes in March both month-on-month and year-on-year, according to preliminary estimates from the local port authority. Total throughput volumes were recorded at 2.5m teu in March, up from 2.15m teu in February. Last month's volume also rose from 2.41m teu seen in March 2010, according to data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. In the first three months of this year, Singapore port moved a total of 7.06m teu of containers, inching up from 6.93m teu in the same period of 2009. Homegrown port operator PSA registered 6.93m teu of throughput from January to March this year, leaving its smaller rival Jurong Port with 130,000 teus of throughput. Last year, Singapore was ranked the world's second largest container port with 28.43m teu moved, trailing behind Shanghai port with 29.07m teu.
