The ice-bound conditions prevailing this winter in the Gulf of Finland have contributed to a nearly 30-percent decrease in exports flow, to 1,6 million tons, the report says. The Group’s companies proceeded with the operations and did not introduce any restrictions on cargo handling. This resulted in congestion of more than 400ths tons of different cargoes at the port’s storage area. The company believes handling of the cargoes may compensate the first-quarter volume drop and catch up with projected figures.
In the reporting period, there was a dramatic recession in nearly all segments of outbound cargoes. The Group reports a 60-percent drop in coal exports from a year earlier, to 319,000 tons, a 86-percent slump in mineral fertilizer, to 15,000 tons. Shipment of metals shrank by 6% to 1 million tons. However, handling of iron increased by 37% to 144,000 tons and the volume of rolling cargoes soared 45% to 84,000 tons.
The Group says the volume of imports doubled in Q1, 2011, up to 619,000 tons. There was also a growth in the segment of bulk cargoes, in particular, ore - by 16% to 106,000 tons. Handling of refrigerated cargo increased by 2 times to 142,000 tons, the packaged cargoes volume rose nearly 3 times, up to 174,000 tons. The Group’s stevedores handled in the reporting period 186,000 tons of imported Ro-Ro cargo (+2.5 times).
First Stevedoring Company handled about 1 million tons of cargo, repeating last year's figures for the period. Rolling cargo throughput at the company’s Ro-Ro terminal grew by twofold and reached 270,000 tons. Second Stevedoring Company handled 455,000 tons (+10%). Third Stevedoring Company handled 8,436 imported cars, a fourfold surge from the last year’s figures. Cargo throughput at the terminal of Fourth Stevedoring Company was down 47% to 343,000 tons, container volume totaled 9,104 TEUs.
Freight turnover at the Ust-Luga Universal Transshipment Terminal dropped by 24% to 343,000 tons.
The Group of companies Seaport St. Petersburg is part of Universal Cargo Logistics Holding BV.
