Ventspils port’s Q1 cargo volume slightly down to 7,16m tons

Cargo throughput of the port of Ventspils (Latvia) in the first quarter of 2011 totaled 7,16 million tons versus 7,21 million tons a year earlier, the Port Authority said.

March volume of handled cargo amounted to 3,740,000 tons, including 1,54m tons of liquid bulk, 1,306,000 tons of dry bulk and 228,000 tons of general cargo.

Free port of Ventspils is a deepwater ice-free port, the largest Latvian port located near the mouth of the Venta River. The port specializes in handling petroleum products, liquid chemicals, fertilizer, metals, timber and fishing products, coal, containers and Ro-Ro trailers. In 2010, cargo throughput of the port dropped 6.8% year-on-year, to 24,815,000 tons.
