Biggest Ro-Ro ship calls at Brunswick

The world’s largest roll-on, roll-off vessel, the Tonsberg, called at Georgia’s Port of Brunswick Monday with a load of heavy-lift project cargo, the Journal of Commerce reports.

The Tonsberg, which is operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, docked at the Port of Brunswick's Colonel's Island Terminal RoRo Facility. Following discharging and loading activity in Brunswick, the Tonsberg will call the Port of Savannah's Ocean Terminal on Tuesday.

The entire cargo hold of the Tonsberg is arranged for oversized and heavy cargo such as excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders and harvesters. With a width of 39.4 feet and safe working load of 505 tons, the vessel’s stern ramp can handle larger units than ever before. The Tonsberg has a length of 869 feet and has a cargo capacity of 4.874 million cubic feet. The clear height of the main deck is 23.3 feet.

The Tonsberg is the first of four Mark V ro-ro vessels that are entering WWL’s fleet. The second vessel will be delivered in August and two in 2012.
