Cargo throughput of the sea port of Rostov-on-Don for July 2011 increased by 12.5% compared to the last year’s figure, to more than 900 000 tons, Russian Shipping reports.
“The increase in freight turnover was due to the lifting of the embargo on grain exports," said harbormaster Vasily Polkovnikov.
He said the port’s terminals handle largely grain, hydrocarbons, coal and scrap metal.
There is a significant growth in transit cargo. From January 1 through August 1 2011, transits volume has totaled 5 million tons versus 2 200 000 tons a year earlier, the harbormaster said.
In July, there were 634 ship arrivals and 777 departures (433 / 422 last year).
Port of Rostov-on-Don became the seaport in the summer of 2009. In June 2010, Federal Tariff Service established for the first time rates of port dues in the ports of Azov and Rostov-on-Don. New procedure of border crossing of vessels and cargo at the two ports came into force on April 20, 2011.
Rostov port located on the strategic point of Russia’s inland waterways enables trade flows passing through the Southern transport corridor. The port terminals handle cargoes shipped to the countries of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
