Charter owner of containerships Seaspan has signed contracts to construct three 10,000 teu container vessels at Chinese yards, plus an option to build 18 more similar newbuildings, Seatrade Asia reported.
The vessels will be chartered under 10-year, fixed-rate time charters with South Korea's Hanjin Shipping. Hanjin will have options to re-charter each ship for an additional 10 years.
The three containerships to be built at Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding and Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding will be delivered in 2014.
“Seaspan intends to fund the construction of the three new 10,000 teu containerships with existing growth capital, including proceeds from its recent series C preferred share offerings, and cash from operations,” the New York-listed firm said.
The containerships will be constructed based on Seaspan's fuel-efficient New Panamax SAVER design.
