United Shipbuilding Corporation will most likely be awarded a contract for nuclear-powered icebreakers, the Minister of Transport said.
According to Igor Levitin, the Russian Government has set aside for 2012 the money for construction of a new generation icebreaker of a series of three newbuilds.
"We want this job to be done by one contractor. In modern conditions it is impossible to identify a company that would be able to build such a ship on its own. In any case, this is integration, and we want one performer to be in charge of the ship building process from start to finish. Most likely, it should be the United Shipbuilding Corporation, and we would not mind it ", RIA Novosti quoted Mr. Levitin as saying.
United Shipbuilding Corporation, founded in 2007, incorporates three regional shipbuilding centers: JSC Western Shipbuilding Center (St. Petersburg), JSC Northern Center of Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (Severodvinsk), JSC Far Eastern Center of Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (Vladivostok), as well as leading marine design offices. United Shipbuilding Corporation also has a 50% stake in Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, a joint venture with STX Finland Cruise Oy.
