The head of the State Maritime and River Transport Supervision of Russia Vladimir Popov resigned at his own request, a source in the agency said.
The source said the decision was made "in connection with certain events," (the MV Bulgaria accident – PortNews).
Peter Yermolayev was appointed acting head of Gosmorrechnadzor effective August 8, 2011.
After the Bulgaria river boat sinking, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that the officials responsible for the disaster and water transport safety should be brought to account.
