Investigators unveil causes of M/V Bulgaria sinking

The proximate cause of sinking of the river cruise boat Bulgaria, which killed 122 people, was the careen of the ship and intake of water through the open portholes. This is the conclusion reached by the Commission of the Federal Service for Supervision of Transport on the results of an investigation into the MV Bulgaria accident, Rostransnadzor said.

The Commission has determined that the cause of the accident was a combination of the following factors: the negligence of the shipowner and shipmaster to the navigation safety requirements while planning the trip as well as low skills and lack of discipline of crew members of the ship.
