Emirates Shipping Line is imposing a port congestion surcharge on import containers at India’s troubled Port of Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru), the Journal of Commerce reported.
The Middle East-based carrier joins other major ocean carriers, including Hapag-Lloyd and APL, in implementing such surcharges to compensate for congestion and berthing delays at India’s largest container gateway.
ESL’s surcharge effective Aug. 15 is $75 per 20-foot container.
“The surcharge applies to all shipments from the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, East Africa and the Indian Subcontinent into Nhava Sheva or inland container depots via Nhava Sheva,” it said.
Port clogging problems at Nhava Sheva followed the ongoing quay crane replacement at the state-owned terminal, spurring carriers to skip calls and reroute vessels to Mundra and Pipavav.
Meanwhile, Hapag-Lloyd said it is making arrangements to transship all import cargo discharged at Mundra by the last Indamex vessel Dubai Express, which omitted the Nhava Sheva call.
