Argentine shipbuilding reviving on River Plate

The export of tugs and barges by Astillero Punta Alvear marks the revival of the Argentine shipbuilding industry, creating both foreign exchange and jobs with skilled labor and knowledge that was in danger of being lost after years of inactivity.

The plant, near the city of Rosario, on the Rio de la Plata, is equipped with the latest naval processes using national steel for the construction of boats.

To date, 21 double-hulled tank barges of 3,000 cubic meters capacity have been delivered and another 21 of 2,500 tons each, for the transport of bulk and dry cargoes.

“Shipyard Punta Alvear is the most modern of its kind in the world and currently produces at a rate of two barges a week. Of the total produced, 38 units were intended for export and four for the domestic market, providing increased delivery to the ultimate destination,” said a company press release.

“We will also aim to develop more and more our industrial profile of plants in Punta Alvear and Ramallo, shipyards that currently build river barges and tugboats, but where we project to diversify production to other types of commercial vessels.

“A little over one year ago with an investment of over $50 million, we opened the shipyard that specializes in building river barges in Punta Alvear, near the city of Rosario,” the company added.

The latest ship delivery was for the Ultrapetrol group, launching the port towing and maneuvering tug Neptuno, built for the UABL river transport company, which will use it for the movement and berthing of barges in port terminals in the area of San Lorenzo, and the Paraná-Paraguay rivers.

The boat, which is 21.8 meters long, 7.8 wide, and draws just over two meters has a total of 1,500 horsepower generated by three 500 HP engines.
