APL will shift its port calls from New York Container Terminal on Staten Island to Maher Terminals in Elizabeth, N.J., next July in a move reportedly influenced by rising tolls at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s bridges, the Journal of Commerce reported.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey last week approved a series of toll increases that will more than double tolls for trucks crossing the port authority’s bridges and tunnels between New Jersey and New York.
The port terminal hit hardest by the tolls would be NYCT, the only major container terminal on the New York side of the harbor.
The Staten Island Advance quoted James Devine, NYCT’s chief executive, as saying APL’s plans to relocate when its current lease expires is due mainly to the carrier’s need for increased capacity but that tolls were “a contributing factor.” He said tolls caused Turkon America line to shift its calls from NYCT in 2009.
APL accounts for more one-third of NYCT’s volume. The terminal has been trying to expand for more than four years but has been stymied by its failure to obtain New York state permits.
