PLP’s box volume hits 500,000teu mark

Year-to-date container traffic at Global Ports’ JSC Petrolesport (PLP) exceeded 500,000 TEUs. The same volume was handled at the terminal for the Jan-Dec period of 2010, the company said. Overall, the terminal box throughput in 2010 was 541,120 TEUs.

The record container volume was driven by the company’s expansion project implemented to improve, among others, the service quality, said PLP’s CCO Alexander Svetlichny. This resulted in increased number of arrivals. In 2011, ocean lines MSC and OOCL resumed ship calls at PLP terminal. Another factor that helped boost container throughput was the organization of a regular train service jointly with Logisitcs Park Yanino LLC.

The PLP expansion is carried out in line with the concept developed by the company in conjunction with Hamburg Port Consulting. Investment in the project in 2011-2012 will reportedly reach over $160 m. The company expects the program will help boost PLP container throughput up to 2.3 million TEUs vs current 1 million TEUs.

Petrolesport (PLP JSC), part of Global Ports Group, is a stevedoring company operating at the Big Port St. Petersburg. The company specializes in handling a broad range of cargo: reefer containers, Ro-Ro cargo, timber and general cargo. PLP JSC is a leading private terminal operator in Russia’s North-West region.

Global Ports Investments Plc (GPI) is a group of companies of leading Russian operators of container terminals. GPI is included in the N-Trance Group, the largest private operator in the transport market of Russia, CIS and Baltic countries.

GPI terminals are located in the Baltic and the Far Eastern basin. GPI manages three Russian container terminals (Petrolesport, Moby Dick in St. Petersburg and the Eastern Stevedoring Company at the port of Vostochny) and two container terminals in Finland (Multi-Link Helsinki, Multi-Link Kotka). Currently, GPI is implementing a project of Yanino dry terminal near St. Petersburg.
