Maersk hikes US-Far East rates

Maersk Line plans to increase freight rates on westbound cargo from the U.S. to the Far East, starting Nov. 15, the Journal of Commerce reported.

Maersk’s notice of its intention to seek a GRI on U.S. exports to the Far East follows the Westbound Transpacific Stabilization Agreement‘s Sept. 30 announcement that its member carriers plan to implement targeted rate increases on export commodities as of Nov. 1.  Maersk is not a WTSA member.

The Danish carrier told its customers Thursday that it will implement a general rate increase on that date of $180 for 20-foot containers and $200 for 40-foot containers, high-cube and 45-foot containers.

The GRI applies to all westbound cargo shipped from ports in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to ports in the Far East, including Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
