Throughput of HaminaKotka rises 7 percent to 11.9 m tons

Cargo traffic at combined Port of HaminaKotka in January-September of this year increased by 7 percent compared with aggregated throughput of the ports of Hamina and Kotka a year before, to 11,940,000 tons, the HaminaKotka Port Authority said.

Trade flows passing through the port in September shrank by 16.5 percent from last year’s figures, to 1.18 million tons.

Nine-month volume of exports rose by 12.6 percent, while inbound and transit cargoes declined by 2.7% and 2.3%, accordingly.

Container traffic increased by 22.8 percent to 458,511 TEUs.

In the reporting period the port of HaminaKotka handled 77,341 vehicles (-4%).

In Jan-Sept., the number of ship calls totaled 2508, in September – 219.

The Finnish ports Kotkan Satama Oy and Haminan Satama Oy merged under a new name on May 1, 2011 to become the largest export port of the country. Throughput of HaminaKotka in 2011 is expected to reach 16.5 million tons of different cargoes.

Kotka is located some 50 kilometers from the Russian Federation border, 280 km off St. Petersburg, 1000 km from Moscow. Port of Kotka comprises ports of Mussalo, Hietanen, Kantasatama, berth Puolanlaituri (Polish berth), berth Halla, and also port premises Sunila. In 2010, the port of Kotka handled about 9,2 million tons.
 
Port of Hamina is the eastern port of Finland located 35 km from the Russian border. In 2010, cargo throughput of the port totaled 3,6 million tons.
