Port of Hong Kong throughput rises 3.2 percent in Jan-Sept

Container traffic at the port of Hong Kong in January-September 2011 grew by 3.2 percent compared with the same period last year, to 18.2 million TEUs, the Port Authority statistics said.

Container throughput of the largest Kwai Tsing terminal rose by 1.8 percent year-on-year, to 12.99 million TEUs. Other box terminals handled 5.02 m TEUs, a 6.9 percent gain.

In September, container trade fell by 5 percent to 1.95 million TEUs. Kwai Tsing boxes volume shrank by 1.8 percent to 1.36 million TEUs, while other terminals’ throughput was down 11.6 percent from a year earlier, to 590,000 TEUs.

Port of Hong Kong is one of the busiest ports in the world. In 2010, Hong Kong port's container trade totaled 23.69 million TEUs. The port is able to handle 456,000 ships a year.
