In its noon bulletin, Bulgarian National Television said that the temperature in Varna was minus 10 degrees Celsius but the wind chill factor made it feel like minus 20.
The Varna – Dobrich road was open but some roads in the region were closed because of the severe weather, the report said.
In Veliko Turnovo, the Yantra River froze over, Bulgarian National Television reported. The city was facing even colder temperatures in coming days, with minimums of minus 25 degrees forecast.
For the first time since it was built, the "Water Mirror" hydro facility in Kurdjali froze over.
The facility, which is three km long, was covered by 10cm of ice, the report said. Municipal authorities warned against attempts to ice skate on the frozen surface.
On January 30, ice-skaters and ice-fishers turned out on the frozen surface of Pancharevo lake near Sofia. The Bulgarian capital city, meanwhile, was forecast to face an overnight minimum of minus 11 degrees, rising to minus six on February 1. Snow, and slightly warmer temperatures, were forecast for the city from February 2 to 5.
