Icebreaker "Russia" reaches Baltic Sea

The nuclear-powered icebreaker "Russia", bound for the Gulf of Finland to replace another Atomflot’s icebreaker "50 Years of Victory", has arrived in the Baltic Sea. According to satellite navigation, the ship is moving now at a speed of about 14.8 knots. The icebreaker Russia’s arrival in the Gulf is expected on 7 March 2012.

The 50 Years of Victory was chartered by Rosmorport for 100 days to beef up a fleet of 14 diesel-electric icebreakers (owned by Rosmorport) and to ensure smooth shipping during this winter season in the region. The icebreakers escort convoys of tankers sailing to/from the port of Primorsk.
