Icebreakers escort 13 cargo ships from Azov Sea-based ports

Rosmorport owned icebreakers the Kapitan Demidov and the Kaptain Chudinov are now guiding a convoy of 13 ships from the ports of Rostov-on-Don, Azov and Taganrog, while the icebreakers Kapitan Moshkin and Kapitan Krutov continue escorting a caravan of 16 ships to the Kerch Strait, the Azov Ice Ops Headquarters said.

There were 27 cargo ships as of March 6th, in the waters of the Sea of Azov, including 25 ships (moving and stricken), the headquarters said. At least 80 ships are in the Black Sea to pass through the Kerch Strait (31 of them have ice-class). Besides, 92 ships (18 ice-classed) in the Sea of Azov are awaiting icebreakers to depart from the regional ports.

The Rosmorport owned icebreakers were deployed to operate in the area in accordance with the instructions of the Azov Ice Operations Headquarters (IOHQ) led by Harbour Master of the Port of Taganrog. So far, the Azov Sea is not accessible for arriving vessel while other ships are not able to depart from the regional ports without icebreaker assistance. The icebreakers work in pairs cutting an open water passage for merchant ships and organize ships convoys to escort them both to the north-east towards the port of Taganrog, Azov, Rostov-on-Don, Yeysk, from these ports to the Kerch Strait, as well as to assist the ships at the port of Temryuk.


FSUE Rosmorport has now a fleet of four diesel-electric icebreakers in the area operated by its regional Azov and Black Sea branches. In addition, the Port of Taganrog has the icebreaking tug Kama, the same class vessel Kapitan Kharchikov operates at the port of Azov, Port of Rostov-on-Don has the icebreaking tug Phanagoria.
