Icebreaker "50 Years of Victory" enters waters of Finland in the Gulf

The Atomflot’s nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Years of Victory has left the Russian part of Gulf of Finland and is currently located in the territorial waters of Finland. The 50 Years of Victory was replaced by the icebreaker Russia.

For the month the 50 Years of Victory had escorted in the Gulf of Finland 111 tankers, mainly Primorsk port-bound vessels, which carried more than 3 million tons of cargo. This winter season the ice thickness does not exceed 40 cm but the captain Dmitry Lobusov believes the world's largest icebreaker was needed in the Baltic Sea. He noted that this year the 50 Years of Victory arrived in the Gulf on time and that it helped to avoid congestions and delays.

The 50 Years of Victory was chartered by Rosmorport for 100 days to beef up a fleet of 14 diesel-electric icebreakers (owned by Rosmorport) and to ensure smooth shipping during this winter season in the region. The icebreakers escort convoys of tankers sailing to/from the port of Primorsk.
