M?rsk containership drydocks at Colombo Dockyard

The emergence of Colombo, Sri Lanka, as a hub for container traffic, is making leading containership operators consider using Colombo Dockyard for their repair requirements, both afloat and in dry dock, now that earlier war time restrictions have been lifted, MarineLog reported.

Last month, A.P. Møller-Mærsk's 1,118 TEU, 13,769 dwt Mærsk Ronneby, built in 2007, called in for her first special survey and drydocking repairs. Colombo Dockyard says it was selected after few rounds of negations and a site visit by a superintendent to the facility. The Colombo shipyard was the best option for the owners/ managers given its strategic location. The vessel discharged her containers in Colombo and shifted directly into drydocks for her repairs.

The repairs were completed within 10 days, one day ahead of the quoted period

The work package covered repairs in all sectors. It included:

Hull blasting and painting, blasting of area approx 1,200 sq.m and special painting of the hull with a Jotun 5-years system. Repairs to Cell guides, hatch cover repairs, fabrication of new platforms, load testing of deck cranes free fall tests of lifeboat davit, load testing of other lifting appliances. Rudder work. Main engine turbocharger overhauling. Renewal of pipelines with special material . Controllable pitch propeller blade seal renewals. Overhaul of bow thruster unit. Main engine liner horning work.

The vessel was accommodated in the shipyard's 30,000 dwt drydock and sailed out direct from the drydocks to the loading berth in the port of Colombo.
