China Navigation orders four bulk carriers

China Navigation Company has ordered four handysize bulk carriers of 39,500 dwt each at Chengxi Shipyard in Jiangyin, China, with an option for six more similar vessels, Seatrade Asia online reports. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered to the deepsea shipping arm of Swire Group between November 2013 and September 2014.

“We have specifically focused on selecting the most fuel efficient handysize bulk carrier design available today, designed by Finnish Naval Architects, Deltamarin, to deliver the lowest cost per tonne mile of any similar sized handy bulk carrier,” claimed Tim Blackburn, managing director of China Navigation.

The tanktops are designed for heavy cargoes and all holds have double skin hydraulic folding hatch covers and forced draft fans for cargo care.

In addition to eight 31,000 dwt multi-purpose newbuildings due for delivery in 2013, China Navigation operates 30 ships of which 17 are owned and managed, deployed in its multi-purpose liner shipping services in Asia-Pacific trading as Swire Shipping.
