Keppel expands capacities

Singapore firm Keppel Philippines Marine Inc. will expand its facilities in Batangas and in Subic due to rising demand for ship repair.
This was conveyed by Keppel Group in a recent government-led investment mission to Singapore, an official said.
Though not as big as other shipbuilding firms that are operating here, namely Hanjin Heavy Industries of Korea and Tsuneishi of Japan, Keppel is focused on medium-sized vessels with cargo capacity of 50,000 tons.
The official said Keppel is in an advanced stage of its plans to expand as it is now registering for incentives with the Board of Investments.
The company is interested more in ship repair because the market for new ships is declining. Demand for repair, maintenance and operation for existing ships is going up.
During the same mission, the Keppel Group indicated interest in doing more biomass power projects.
Focus is smaller and on off-grid power plants where Keppel has perfected the technology for similar projects in Singapore.
As the leading shipyard group in the Philippines, Keppel Marine offers various services in construction, conversion, repair and fabrication services to the offshore and marine industry.
Keppel Marine operates Keppel Batangas Shipyard and Keppel Subic Shipyard.
Keppel Batangas Shipyard is strategically located along the main trade route of the South China Sea, making the yard the choice partner of many shipowners.
Keppel Subic Shipyard is in Subic, Zambales, and has one of the largest drydocks in Philippines that is capable of co-drydockings.
The Batangas facility has more than 30 years of experience in ship repair and has undertaken extensive works on a wide range of vessels spanning bulk and container carriers, multi-purpose barges, dredgers, offshore support vessels and liquefied petroleum gas tankers.
It has a track record of more than 90 newbuilds ranging from offshore oil rig sections, tankers, barges and tugs to asphalt carriers.
Keppel Subic Shipyard (formerly Subic Shipyard and Engineering Inc.) is a shipyard serving ocean-going vessels of up to 340,000 dwt. It provides repair, conversion and building services, tank cleaning, internal tank coating as well as voyage repairs for internal tanks using ultra-high pressure. It also undertakes steel fabrication for land-based and marine or offshore structures.
The yard is managed by Keppel Shipyard Limited, whose expertise includes ship repair and conversion, shipbuilding and offshore engineering.
Keppel Subic Shipyard features one of the largest drydocks in the Philippines. The 550-meter by 65m dock is capable of co-drydockings, providing greater flexibility and turnaround times for shipowners.
KPMI was originally incorporated in 1992 as Kepphil Shipyard Inc. and was registered with the BOI in 1993 as a ship repair and shipbuilding enterprise enjoying preferred pioneer status.
In 1998, Keppel Philippines Group of Companies implemented a reorganization that included the change in the corporate name of Kepphil Shipyard Inc. to Keppel Philippines Marine Inc.
In 2005, Keppel Marine obtained its registration with the BOI as a new export producer of tugboats, general cargo vessels and oil rig hulls.
In 2009, Keppel Cebu Shipyard Inc. ceased operations and is now a dormant company.
