Mr. Tamilvanan said that the port handled 20.75 lakh tonnes of LPG in 2011-12 against 19.17 lakh tonnes in 2010-11. It has exceeded the quantity of LPG traffic handled by the Vishakhapatnam, Kandla, Mumbai, Tuticorin, Haldia and Kochi ports.
The port's revenue was Rs.367 crore and net surplus Rs.123 crore in 2011-12. It has repaid a government loan of Rs.40.26 crore.
The port handled 45,009 TEUs in 2011-12 as against 40,158 TEUs in the previous year, an increase of 12.08 per cent.
While the port handled a higher traffic in LPG, petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products to MRPL, coal, edible oil, fertilizer, cement and timber, it handled less quantities of iron ore fines and iron pellets from KIOCL.
A coal-handling facility for Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) involving an investment of Rs.230 crore, set up on a BOT basis, was commissioned in November last year. Ongoing projects at NMPT include construction of a berth for POL.
