New container terminal to be built in the port of Riga

New terminal for transshipment of containers is planned to be built in the port of Riga, RZD-Partner reports. The port’s Board has approved the decision to sign an agreement with Nacionalais konteineru terminals (National Container Terminal) for rent of the land plot. Karlis Leishkalns, Public Relations Manager of Riga port announced the Board’s decision to give 100 hectares on 45-years lease to the company. The terminal is planned to have the capacity of 2 million TEU per year. According to Karlis Leishkalns, new terminal is to serve the flow of containers going to East Asia and Western part of Russia from Europe and back. "European Union will increase volume of cargo transit via European ports so there will be enough cargo for all the ports, " Karlis Leishkalns thinks.

Nacionalais konteineru terminals has been incorporated in May 2006. Currently, container transshipment in the port of Riga is carried out by Baltic Container Terminal.
