Chennai port traffic down 9.6 percent

In fiscal year 2011-12, the Chennai Port handled 55.71-million tonnes of cargo, witnessing 9.63% decline as against the previous financial year due to the halt of iron ore and coal handling, SME News reports.

Despite losing iron ore and coal, the port has not posted any heavy financial loss. The port had lead to the generation of operating income worth Rs 620 crore along with an operating surplus worth Rs 36 crore. The net surplus for the year stands at Rs 6 crore.

Container traffic posted 2.22% rise to 1.55 million twenty foot equivalent units. After Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Chennai is considered as the second largest container handling port in India.
