The recently established G6 Alliance will begin weekly calls at Gothenburg, helping Sweden’s biggest port secure a second direct deep sea service to Asia, the Journal of Commerce reported.
The service will be inaugurated by the APL Finland, an 8,110 20-foot equivalent units capacity ship, which will call at APM Terminals facility on April 18.
“APM Terminals is the only container terminal in Sweden that can handle vessels of this size. Major investments have been made in cranes, hinterland connections, terminal areas and fairways to make this possible,” said Port of Gothenburg Chief Executive Magnus Karestedt.
APM Terminals recently won a 25-year contract to operate the terminal, which has an annual capacity of around 800,000 TEUs.
The new service will also call at two other European ports – Bremerhaven and Rotterdam.
The rotation is: Shanghai-Ningbo-Shekou-Singapore-Tangier-Rotterdam-Bremerhaven-Gothenburg-Rotterdam-Jeddah-Singapore-Shekou-Hong Kong-Shanghai.
Until now Gothenburg has had only one direct service to the Far East, operated weekly by Maersk Line’s largest vessels.
The G6 alliance, comprising APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine, MOL, Hapag-Lloyd, NYK and OOCL, was established to compete on the Asia-Europe trade with Maersk’s Daily Maersk service and a partnership between Mediterranean Shipping Co. and CMA CGM.
