Dredge Port Frederick arrives in Mooloolaba harbour

WHILE many boats come and go daily from the busy Mooloolah River mouth, one ship's arrival yesterday was a sight for many sore sea-faring eyes, Sunshine CoastDaily reported.

A giant dredge, which goes by the name of the Port Frederick, sailed into Mooloolaba harbour to begin its work dredging the dangerous sandbar at the Mooloolah River mouth.

The dredge, from the Gold Coast, will start to pump sand off the bar as soon as its initial testing is completed. Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said while the work's progress would be dependent on the weather, it was hoped the job could be finished in a fortnight.

"It's great to see it here at last," Ms Simpson said.

The sand bar, which has formed just outside the river mouth, has proven hazardous for the many boats and trawlers that negotiate the river mouth, with many vessels striking the bar at lower tides.
